NAME: mel
CONTACT:
OTHER CHARACTERS IN THE PINES: Clint Barton, Stiles Stilinski
NAME: Alex Rider
CANON: Alex Rider series
CANON-POINT: post Crocodile Tears
HISTORY: it's your boy alex
WHAT ARE YOUR CHARACTER'S STRENGTHS?:
Improvisation.
- When things don't go as planned, he manages to keep a level head and has a singular talent in coming up with incredibly creative solutions off the cuff. Alex can always find the third option when his back's against the wall.
- No matter what happens to Alex, or what he's forced to go through, he always manages to survive. This kid is basically impossible to kill. And trust me, plenty of people have tried.
- Alex won't give up even when everything is stacked against him. Admittedly he's pretty far stretched at this point in his canon though and even he's starting to doubt how much he's got left in him before he runs dry in this regard.
- It's not that he isn't afraid, he is, almost constantly at this point in his life. He simply manages to push through it and do the right thing even in the face of terrifying odds.
- Alex proved in his time with Scorpia that he could never purposefully take a human life. And while he's stated on more than one occasion that he doesn't want to work for MI6, he continues to do so in order to protect others.
- He puts things together fast, observes and gathers data, and he isn't easily fooled. To the point where he's honestly more naturally suspicious of any sort of altruism at this point, but at least the paranoia makes him hyper-observant.
- He won't leave things alone until he has all the facts. Until he understands. Anything even slightly unusual will have his unwavering attention until he manages to solve it.
WHAT ARE YOUR CHARACTER'S WEAKNESSES?:
Impulsive.
- This has gotten him into trouble on more than one occasion. It's the reason he caught MI6's attention in the first place. He doesn't always think his actions through before he does them. In his defense he doesn't always have the time, but even when he does he'll often make incredibly impulsive decisions anyway.
- Time and exposure to the life of a spy has only made Alex more sassy. He easily makes jokes about the deaths of various villains, and it could appear to some as if he isn't taking things seriously. Often he'll distance himself from serious issues like death or trauma with his one liners.
- 1 1/2 weeks with the SAS is not nearly enough preparation for everything he's gone through. Most of what he does on missions is instinct based instead. Sometimes? It really really shows.
- He has a lot of it. A whole country full. He's almost died too many times to count, has watched too many people die, and actually caused one man to commit suicide in front of him by claiming that he would rather die than be his son. And nobody has ever given him a chance to deal with these issues. It's all just sort of broiling and building just beneath the surface.
- His parents died when he was an infant, his uncle died when he was 14, and he's lost the ability to connect with anyone else in his life following his work with the MI6. A lot of people die around him, honestly.
- Incredibly so. Alex only has three people that he can be honest to about his life, and one of them lives in a different country now.
- Alex has no idea what kids his age are even supposed to be like anymore. His classmates all feel younger than him and when pressed to pretend to be normal, he tends to act younger than he should to overcompensate.
- He won't leave things alone until he has all the facts. Until he understands. Anything even slightly unusual will have his unwavering attention until he manages to solve it.
WHAT EVENTS OR CIRCUMSTANCES IN YOUR CHARACTER'S PAST HAVE IMPACTED THEM THE MOST?:
Well first and foremost would definitely have to be his uncle dying and his curiosity getting the better of him resulting in him putting himself on MI6's radar. This is the big one, because everything else after that would never have happened without him getting dragged kicking and screaming into the spy life by Blunt. But there are a couple of pretty impactful events that resulted from this as well. Sarov killing himself in front of Alex was awful for him, one of the few deaths to follow his "career"in espionage that really truly stuck with him. Particularly considering that Sarov was one of the few adults in his life to actually be honest about what he wanted from Alex, one of the few to actually see him as a kid.
Yassen dying was also pretty rough on Alex, but mostly because his death sent Alex into Sorpia's grasp, and ultimately made him an enemy of them when he finally managed to wrench himself free from them again. Making himself an enemy of Scorpia has basically put a giant target on his back, bigger than any he's had up to this point. And finally, finding out that his godfather was responsible for his parent's death? That was sort of like the final nail in the coffin of Alex's trust in adults.
WHAT MOTIVATES YOUR CHARACTER?:
That's... a tough one, honestly. When he's doing his job, at this point, it's mostly because he doesn't have any other choice. He's either being blackmailed by MI6 (or the CIA, or whatever new intelligence operation has him in their grasp now) or he's simply fighting for his life. Internal motivation is a different matter entirely, and probably mostly boils down to sheer stubbornness. And that darn troublesome curiosity of his, of course, he just can never seem to be able to let things lie for long.
WHAT IMPRESSION DO OTHERS TEND TO HAVE OF YOUR CHARACTER?:
Honestly other people's impressions of him depend on the scenario and what Alex wants them to think about him (he is a spy after all). The people at his school think he's a thug and a druggie, the only real explanation they could come up with for why he's always missing so much school and often comes back looking haggard and worn out. For people who actually stick around long enough to get a real impression of Alex though, and can manage to look past his flippant and dismissive exterior, he seems hard to reach, distant, reserved. When he has the opportunity and the inclination he can be kind, polite, and typically speaks with a soft voice.
... like I said, it really depends on the situation how people wind up seeing Alex, because you know, that's kind of his whole job, and it's what keeps him alive.
IN WHAT WAYS DOES THAT IMPRESSION DIFFER FROM WHO YOUR CHARACTER REALLY IS?:
To be honest? Alex isn't as good at this spy stuff as he probably should be, at least not when it comes to the whole acting thing because he more or less winds up just presenting facets of himself rather than creating something new and different for each mission, so a lot of people's impressions of him are pretty accurate if rather shallow?
Under the right circumstances, Alex is a polite, soft spoken boy who likes to keep mostly to himself. He's friendly and kind, but doesn't hold with bullies of any sort and will absolutely step up if the situation calls for it. When he's stressed and angry he's sarcastic and dismissive, and at this point most of his patience has all but dried up and turns into anger instead. He hates the situation he's in and the people that have put him there, and if he doesn't get angry he'll only sink into depression and at least the anger can manage to motivate him to do something so he winds up falling back on that in times of crisis lately. He has trouble connecting with people anymore as well, and has lost sight of how a kid his age should feel or act.
Alex is a big old mess, basically, and he relies on good old British understatement to hide most of it.
HOW DOES YOUR CHARACTER HANDLE CRISIS OR ADVERSITY?:
I mean honestly? If we look at his M.O.? He winds up blowing a lot of shit up. Literally. Alex isn't one to stand still and just let things happen, he'd much rather be the thing that's happening to other people in that case. He hates feeling hopeless or like he's lost his autonomy and he'll fight tooth and nail against whatever has put him in that situation. And Alex fighting tooth and nail usually ends in something being blown up, or set on fire, that's just a game of numbers really.
To put it another way? There's absolutely no way in Hell that Alex isn't going to find that weird ominous fence around the town and try to find a way past it, once he has his spying memories back. Hell, even before he gets those memories back, his innate curiosity isn't likely to let that sort of shit stand for long.
WHICH 5 THINGS WILL YOUR CHARACTER REMEMBER UPON ARRIVAL, AND WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THEM?:
1. His name.
2. His parents died when he was a baby.
3. His uncle died just recently.
4. He's been in and out of the hospital since his uncle died.
5. He got really really hurt a little while ago and he thinks it was from a bike accident? This memory is a little more uncertain. He certainly remembers saying he was, anyway.
Basically, he's not going to remember any of his spy life nonsense at first and it's going to be a slow and terrible realization as he starts to remember because I like to be cruel to this boy, okay.

DISLIKES: bullies, drugs, drowning, being cornered, getting talked down to, adults trying to kill him, loss of autonomy
Alex is, on the surface, a polite, unassuming boy who, when left to his own devices, manages to more or less be well liked by his peers without quite being one of the popular kids.
Insatiable curiosity, in the end, was what changed everything for Alex. The fact that he was just too clever to accept the surface explanation for what had happened to his uncle. So he dug and he dug until he hit the MI6. Alex is plagued by curiosity, really, even when he hasn't been assigned a mission from MI6 he just can't seem to let things go without looking into them himself.
Alex suffers from PTSD and more than likely a bit of depression as well. He feels disconnected from people, can prove to be too wary and suspicious. Real life is already beginning to be a complete mystery to Alex, and as much as he claims to hate them, he's far more comfortable working for MI6 at this point than he is at school.
Despite everything Alex has been through, however, he still manages to keep a sense of humor. It just happens to be gallows humor, is all. On numerous occasions, Alex's reaction to a criminal's death has been to crack a joke about it, and he never exactly seems all that broken up about it.
Alex is anxious, wary, and slow to trust, though he'll usually cover that up with a thin veneer of good manners and shallow friendliness. He's actually a pretty decent actor, perhaps partly because of the act that MI6 forced him to play on all of his classmates, though his time with Scorpia certainly strengthened any weak points he might have had in this area.
He's been continuously proven time and again that the adults that should be protecting him and keeping him safe cannot be trusted to do anything other than use and discard him, that the likelihood that an authority figure is lying to him is nearly 100%, and that at the end of the day, he can really only depend on himself.
He's been burned, drowned, poisoned, drugged, shot, tortured, and he only just turned 15. He's tired, fed up, and doesn't see any way out. But if he doesn't get out soon he's going to self destruct. It's only a matter of time.
- His name.
- His parents died when he was a baby.
- His uncle died just recently.
- He's been in and out of the hospital since his uncle died.
- He got really really hurt a little while ago and he thinks it was from a bike accident? This memory is a little more uncertain. He certainly remembers saying he was, anyway.
- Alloran (
takenalive) regularly leaves fruits, veggies, herbs, etc at Alex's doorstep but has yet to actually speak to alex face to face. - Cassian (
ouzel) is that younger, chiller adult friend that doesn't try to run Alex's life for him but does ask pointed questions about new injuries at weekly dinners. - Jyn (
realists) is Cassian's even chiller girlfriend that sometimes has to get reminded to file her taxes by Alex and regularly undermines Cassian trying to be a responsible adult. - Peter (
webshoots) started out as a science tutor trying to get Alex more invested in physics and ended as a guy just trying to convince Alex not to accidentally kill himself with reckless behavior. - Archer (
professorfreischutz) is part of Alex's extended family. Well. He's his only family now, really. They weren't especially close before Ian's death, but that's slowly changing. - Lalli (
skittering) and Alex have a passing familiarity with each other centered around the nearby forest in that vaguely positive sort of way you view people you meet that haven't done anything to offend you yet.
That doesn't stop his natural suspicion and curiosity from getting him into trouble, and after his bike accidentally blew up a cop car, his asthma inhaler knocked him unconscious, and he successfully infiltrated the psych ward floor of the hospital, Alex is more sure than ever that he's missing something. Not about the town, oh no, the public broadcast following the aberration attack took care of that.
It's something about himself. Something about the crawling under his skin, and the way perfectly harmless words like 'godfather' leave him feeling hot and sick. The way he instinctively distrusts authority figures and lies as easy as breathing.
He's not sure he's going to like the answer to these questions, but he's never let something like that stop him before and he's not about to start now. Hopefully he manages to keep the explosions to a minimum as he slowly starts to rediscover himself in Wayward Pines.
